A former aide to John Edwards says the two-time presidential candidate’s wife has threatened to sue him for contributing to the downfall of their marriage.
Andrew Young said Wednesday that Elizabeth Edwards has threatened an “alienation of affection” lawsuit. Young said he had anticipated that the Edwards family would come after him following his book about the candidate’s affair.
Curious that a liberal feminist would even consider a lawsuit of this kind. From an October 2009 Winston-Salem Journal story about the arguments for and against “alienation of affection”:
Supporters say that the concept of “alienation of affection” is a relic of a time when women were considered the property of their husbands. Nowadays, these lawsuits are often used by one spouse to harass the other spouse through the court system or to try to gain leverage during a messy divorce.
Here’s hoping these folks somehow find some peace.
