Thomas Sowell is never better than when he’s on the offensive against progressive politicians who benefit from policies that keep poor children ignorant. That’s the point of this column. In particular, he singles out Barack Obama and Eric Holder, writing “Reducing the sanctions against misbehavior in school virtually guarantees that classroom disorder will make the teaching of other black students less effective, if not impossible.”

A fact that stands out, both here and abroad, is that children of recent immigrants often do very well in school, while the children of native-born minority families often do very poorly, disdaining academic effort because doing so is “acting white.” That is because, Sowell explains, the former “have not been saturated for generations with the rhetoric of victimhood and hopelessness, spread by people like Obama, Holder, and their counterparts overseas.”
