When C.D. Spangler retired in 1997 as UNC system president, the university was forced to:

  • Pay its president for the first time in 11 years (Spangler had always donated his salary to the campuses)
  • Get a new means of speedy transportation for the president (Spangler had used his own plane without billing UNC)

Spangler also liked the president’s Franklin Street home so much that he spent $1 million to buy a neighboring house. Since the house had been valued at roughly $300,000, he must have really liked the neighborhood.

Now, Spangler has made another gift to the university.
