Downtown Maggie Valley may become a theme park. The aldermen will soon have to vote on new design standards intended to replace the town’s 1950s look with a “mountain look.” Only subdued colors and natural materials will be allowed on building exteriors, flat roofs will be outlawed, and property owners will have to plant more trees. City fathers believe tourism is down because people are tired of looking at the same old buildings. Since people cannot afford to build in the current market, they feel this is a good time to enact new standards to drive up the town’s planning penalty. The Smoky Mountain News said business owner Allen Alsbrooks said, “installing the mountain-themed look on his business would not pay for itself.”
