Another cause to rejoice is that the state did not consider cutting greenway funding when Education Lottery teacher positions were being put on the chopping block as a public ensample. This year, the Parks and Recreation Trust Fund, supported by deed transfer excise taxes, contributed $6.7 million toward parks and greenways. WNC projects profiting off the venture include a $365,285, 1.6-mile trail in McDowell County; a $75,613 picnic shelter and playground in Marshall; and a $48,000 land acquisition to expand a park in Columbus.
