Captain of the Wasp, Johnston Blakely may have been the most successful American naval commander of the War of 1812. While on the seas, his successes were reported back in the States, and he became a national hero. He never enjoyed being famous, however, for his ship and crew disappeared in Fall 1814. Another Tar Heel mariner, Otway Burns, contributed to the successful American war effort.
