You remember “Box Tops for Education”? In Northampton County, they’ve done one better. According to an AP story
(I’m quoted but the reporter spelled my name wrong), the driving force
behind the county’s willingness to put up $1.8 million in land
for the Advanced Vehicle Research Center is that the high school won an electric vehicle competition.
And for Northampton County, building the center is more than just economic development, but also an investment in its children.
Gary Brown, Northampton County’s economic development director, said
the center might have gotten off the ground without the success of the
high school’s automotive students, “but the excitement that has grown
and in those young people is truly inspiring and induces us to
capitalize on their talent, on their ambition, on their hopes and their
dreams.”
To which my wife asked: “How does a test track improve the education of the county’s students?” UPDATED
