The Town of Canton’s swimming pool is reportedly in dreadful need of repair. The buzzwords are “safe” and “green.” Water is leaking badly, and that is wasteful. If the leaks are not repaired, another child might fall through the cracks. It is estimated the pool repairs will require $750,000, and the restrooms, changing rooms, and concession stand will require another $250,000. To help things, the town hired a consultant to perform the estimates. He recommended the town bust up the existing pool and build a new one within three to five years. Alderman Eric Dills doesn’t think the town should be paying for such frivolities right now. The canned response to that is: Partner. The Town of Sylva and Swain County have gotten grants from the NC Parks and Recreation Trust Fund for their pools. Dills thinks the bank – er, state – might be a little less loose with its change this year.
