Recently, The Associated Press and The News & Observer ran stories about former N.C. Agriculture Commissioner Meg Scott Phipps being released from prison but neglected to tell readers that she was a Democrat. AP Raleigh Bureau Chief emailed me to say it was an oversight and her party ID was added in updated stories. The News & Observer got snippy on its new blog, Under the Dome. They said it was an oversight as well.
Maybe not. It seems The Charlotte Observer, in a story about former House Speaker Jim Black possibly getting a 10-year prison sentence, also neglected to mention that Black is a Democrat. Not only a Democrat, but the most powerful one this state has had in a long time. Coincidence? Oversight? There’s a lot of that going around.
