Often, letters to the editor are so crazy, they merit no response. Today, the Mountain Xpress has one that makes a fair assessment. Author Ian Rudick complains that Obamacare is a great plan, but its bureaucracy isn’t exactly functioning smoothly. And that is just the point. I’m a big fan of America because it wasn’t designed to be bureaucratic. Bureaucracies, however noble their aims, tend toward confusion and botch. Welfare states replace fair trade with unfair trade. Rule by the few often turns into rule by a few megalomaniacal crackpots. Personal responsibility under limited government is not perfect, but it promises fewer opportunities for mass political foul-up.
