Evidence keeps accumulating for the proposition I have written about many times: no matter what the problem is, local governments typically view the right answer to be a tax increase.

In Rockingham County, for example, the manager has just proposed a small property-tax hike for the coming year. The reason? Not enough growth in the area. ?”Rockingham County is not currently generating sufficient growth in ad valorem tax base to sustain the level of county government we presently provide,? the manager said.

But in Mecklenburg, Wake, Union, Cabarrus, and other counties, commissioners are being told either by county managers or school officials that the costs of growth must be covered with tax increases. ?The tax rate?s just a function of the demand,? said the Cabarrus manager.

My knee hurts today due to some boisterous exercise last night. I?m thinking a property-tax hike might help.
