Michael Medved hits the nail on the head with this column today. He argues that big government is the breeding ground for corruption and therefore it’s essential to start downsizing our mega-state.

He’s absolutely right. Just as Willie Sutton liked to rob banks because that was where the money was, the modern Willie Suttons hire lobbyists to make sure that some of the trillions that governments spend is channeled their way.

During the McCarthy era, the libertarian writer Frank Chodorov said, “If you’re really worried about communists in government jobs, just get rid of the government jobs.” If you’re worried about corruption in government programs today, just get rid of the government programs.
