According to the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, mini cars like the Smart Car, Honda Fit, and the Toyota Yaris are significantly less safe than typical mid-size cars. According to the New York Times (sorry I don’t have a more reliable and legitimate news source) “crash dummies in all three models tested…fared poorly in the collisions.” Also, the Times reports that “the institute concludes that while driving smaller and lighter cars
saves fuel, ?downsizing and down-weighting is also associated with an
increase in deaths on the highway,? said Adrian Lund, the institute?s
president”

I guess maybe that’s why the greens like these cars. Not only do they reduce atmospheric CO2 but they help cut down on the surplus population.
