From Rasmussen:

More Americans than ever (63%) think a government that is too powerful is a bigger danger in the world today than one that is not powerful enough. A new Rasmussen Reports national telephone survey finds that just 21% disagree and think a government that is not powerful enough is a bigger danger. Seventeen percent (17%) are not sure.

All levels of government now blanket every aspect of our lives, from the trees in our yard, to our ability to freely practice our trade in order to earn a living, to the decision of whether or not, or how much health insurance we want to purchase. Even though this survey data is keyed to the federal government, it gives me a glimmer of hope about support for more limited government.

A great primer on the value and impact of limited government, free markets, and personal responsibility are JLF’s books, First in Freedom and Our Best Foot Forward. JLF’s John Hood talks about the issues here.
