The Henderson County Board of Commissioners agreed to cancel sheriff’s services for the Town of Mills River. They mercifully agreed to extend the contract for a year. In response, town leadership asked their constituents if they would rather have garbage pickup or police service. General Statutes require incorporated local governments to provide at least four services from a list of eight. The numbers are now in, and Town Manager Jeff Wells said provision of one or the other could force the town to impose a 10-cent tax increase, nearly doubling the current 11.224 cent rate.
