Maybe it’s something in the water, but it’s not just in Durham. Bureaucrats everywhere seem to be losing their sense of proportion and common sense. Take the U-Haul situation in Durham. The county seized the land on which the downtown U-Haul was located so they could use it for a new courthouse. U-Haul had to move, so it put up signs telling people where it had moved to. That was a sensible thing to do since online yellow pages and other references still placed the U-Haul business at that location. But what did the county do?:

The signs, the officials say, must come down.

Jay Ferguson, the lawyer representing U-Haul, got a letter last week from Assistant County Attorney Curtis Massey detailing the county’s position.

The county, Massey noted, has not permitted “commercial advertisements” on its property in the past “and is unwilling to agree to same in this instance.”

To Ferguson, the county is being unreasonable, vengeful — and inconsistent.

Can we also add stupid.
