Winston-Salem Journal columnist John Railey presents a compelling argument against economic incentives before -you guessed it —ultimately concluding that government has no choice:

Incentives are part of that model. We can dream of a day when companies will come here just for our quality of life, work force and perhaps a few new roads.

For now, we have no choice but to take our place in the incentives game. It’s a tough one that demands brains, a sharp eye for details and the courage to take calculated risks and drive hard bargains. This is the world we live in. But our leaders should not forget that ultimately they are playing with our tax dollars.

That demands real transparency and accountability.

Good luck with that. Meanwhile —yippee—- the sod is ready for the new downtown taxpayer-funded stadium. Take a look at the comments and you’ll note that Journal readers aren’t overly impressed.
