Novelists inhabit a fantasy world of sorts, and that almost always clouds their vision of the actual world in which we and they live. For proof, read this roll call of 31 novelists, each explaining his or her vote for president. It is hilarious. That four of them actually publicly declare their intent to vote Bush is amazing. (One of those brave souls is the ever invaluable Orson Scott Card of Greensboro.)

My favorite line is this, from someone named Nicole Krauss:

“I really think it’s not alarmist to say that if Bush is reelected to another four years, it may be the end of life as we know it. Certainly it will be the end of life for many species, including huge numbers of the species Homo sapiens.”
