To save money, as it is awash in red ink. Both the Randolph Road and Uptown sites will now be closed on Tuesdays in addition to Mondays (when the museum has traditionally been closed) and hours are being cut the other five days of the week.

What’s behind this? As UPoR reports:

In its latest annual report to the Internal Revenue Service, the Mint reported $6.3 million in revenue vs. $10 million in expenses for the year ending in June 2012. Investment income fell $1.6 million.

So only three years after the Mint moved into its new location Uptown, we are faced with the reality that its current operations are unsustainable. Sadly, this shouldn’t really come as a surprise.
