During the public comment portion of tonight’s Asheville City Council meeting, several took the podium to ask council to do something about ABCCM. The ministry, which has a good reputation for rehabilitating homeless veterans, was recently in the news for charges of discrimination. Emily Bagby made big press when she sued the ministry for offering women courses in emotional therapy and crafts, while men were offered vocational opportunities. Speakers echoed Bagby’s allegations of sexism.

The scene was a little irritating. It is tremendous if somebody can live their entire life and help only one wipeout rediscover fulfillment as a productive member of society. The Vets Quarters has helped many. Applying modern logic, they should be punished for not giving everybody the kind of charity they want.
