With all of the money the federal govermment is creating out of thin air these days, it seems appropriate now to reach the point in William Safire’s Political Dictionary at which he discusses “double digit,” as in “double-digit inflation.”

Safire traces the term’s common use to a 1974 New York Times lead editorial from Leonard Silk.?

Let’s hope we won’t be seeing a repeat use of Mr. Silk’s language in the years ahead.
