Last night Charlotte City councilman John Tabor may have hit upon a fine standing policy in his response to news that the Charlotte Area Transit System wants more than 50,000 square feet of prime office space on West Trade Street.

Tabor said CATS should decamp to somewhere along the new South Blvd. light rail line as a sort of proof-concept template for other office development along the corridor. In sum, if the rail line is as great as CATS keeps telling us, CATS should be thrilled to set up shop out Arrowood Rd. way. In the corporate world it is called eating your own dog food and plenty do it both to save money and to demonstrate commitment to their product.

Or as Tabor put it: “We need to put CATS out there and put our money where our mouth is.”

Seriously, there is very little besides vanity that has CATS even considering some of the most expensive — and potentially revenue producing — land in the county for its own office-space.

So from now on, if our government officials tell us something is great, let’s ask if they do it — first.
