Now that it is official and the Mecklenburg County Board of Commissioners has hiked property taxes again, here is the test.

If you own a home in Mecklenburg, go to this site and plug in your name. When the data pops up, click on the “tax bills” link at the top. That will take you to your property tax bills for 2004 through 2006.

Take a look at the number for 2004 and notice how it has grown in the past three years. That number is now certain to grow a little more for 2007.

What have you received for the extra $200, $300, or $500 you’ve paid? Try to think of one actual service or capital improvement that can justify that added expense. For added fun, remember that every person in your household has paid an additional $60 or so each year to supply CATS with its train-building fund.

Is that all money well spent? Do you feel good about that?

Now if you don’t live in the county or don’t own property, just amuse yourself with the tax bills of Pat McCrory, Pat Mumford, or Dumont Clarke.

Guess they think they are getting their money’s worth.
