On behalf of everyone at the John Locke Foundation, I would like to welcome The Charlotte Observer to the ongoing fight to reform North Carolina’s absurd end-of-grade testing regime.

As John Hood notes here, the Locke Foundation has for years pointed out that the state tests were worthless as actual measures of student progress. Worse, the tests actively deceive parents and taxpayers about the public schools. As we’ve noted before, the entire point of the tests seems to be to provide pro-status quo propaganda for the edu-establishment statewide.

Were the educrats in Raleigh running a publicly traded corporation with similarly fudged numbers, they’d be frog-marched out the door and into prison. If we are serious about education, maybe that isn’t such a bad idea anyway.
