When it recently came to light that John Edwards pocketed almost half a million dollars as a consultant to an investment firm that keeps its funds in the Cayman Islands, he said that he did it to learn about the relationship between capital markets and poverty. The WSJ today has an editorial that calls our former senator’s truthfulness into question.

Why can’t Edwards just say, “I like the lifestyle of the rich and famous”?

I think Edwards’ answer on this ranks with Bill Clinton’s “but I didn’t inhale.”
