The Smoky Mountain News is concerned about Evergreen Packaging’s new EPA regulatory burden estimated at $50 million. The coal-fired manufacturing plant has spent $330 million on compliance with old regulations since 1990. In order to retain high-paying manufacturing jobs while upgrading to cleaner fuels, Evergreen has applied for a couple multi-million grants from the state. Avram Friedman of the Canary Coalition would rather see the company retooled to function on wind and solar energy, technologies state regulators don’t think can shoulder the load.
