Bannon says the case became what it became only because of the statements of Nifong. “Him,” he said with emphasis, looking at Nifong. He said they pleaded with the AG and special prosecutors, Jim Coman and Mary Winstead, that if they found these men were innocent that they should say that. He said he believes the work of Coman and Winstead led to this actually happening.
Bannon said he can’t count the times he heard people say the DA wouldn’t be saying these things if something didn’t happen. Says it prejudiced the case, no doubt. Said Nifong is the only reason that some people still believe “something happened that night.”
