Somebody tell Barack and Michelle Obama that you don’t deal with bullies by trying to be reasonable. Bullies are not reasonable people. To see how fruitless that tactic is, just look at how successful Obama has been trying to be reasonable with Gadhafi.

The video linked below, as I said yesterday in a Facebook update, is very satisfying. I could tell from the video that the bully was not harmed seriously, though surely he was bruised and battered. But, hey, that’s what you get when you torment a kid who outweighs you by 50 pounds. This little punk learned a life lesson at an early age. Let’s hope he remembers it. But here’s the problem. The kid who was being tormented, and who finally had to retaliate because he was getting hit in the face and stomach, also was suspended. The bully got 20 days and the victim got four. My question: Why did he get any suspension at all?

Let’s look at the logic. The victim was suspended for also resorting to violence, the school said. OK. Let’s imagine what would have happened if he hadn’t resorted to violence. He’d have remained a punching bag until the little jerk who was hitting him got so tired he had to take a break. Is that what the school management would have preferred?

In my view, a kid has a right to retaliate with violence in a case like this. That’s the only way to stop it. Unfortunately, in our modern society, here in the U.S. and also in Australia, apparently, too many people in positions of authority (school headmasters as well as presidents) don’t understand that.
