Spiegel Online’s story about the 400th anniversary of the founding of the Jamestown colony is more like the left-wing Spiegel we all know and love. The blog Medienkritik, located in Germany, does a blow-by-blow, but this is my favorite part:
Millenia before the first Europeans arrived there were already people on this continent, and they represented a highly developed civilization.
Every time I hear that argument I recall Ward Best, who was then the business editor at The Herald-Sun, skewering a PC newsroom drudge who made a similar claim about native American culture at the time of the white man’s arrival: “Yeah, they were so advanced they hadn’t even discovered the wheel!”
