For year I’ve believed that we’d have a more credible debate over taxes and spending if taxpayers were required to actually write checks to the feds and the state for the income taxes they owe. This Wall Street Journal column — Yoder & Son — proves my point. Isaac Yoder, who is paid as a contractor by Dow Jones — so he is responsible for setting aside his taxes — was “shocked to see the final number on the screen.” That number, of course, is the amount he owes the government on top of what he has already forked over. Clearly, we would watch public spending and taxation quite closely if this scenario played out at every kitchen table every quarter of the year. And that’s exactly why politicians will prevent it from happening.
