There’s another phony scandal brewing after a whispered voice was heard on air during last night’s Republican debate. The voice, which sounded like debate moderator Brian Williams to me, said what sounded like “raise taxes” after the other debate moderator Tim Russert had asked candidate Mitt Romney a question.

Left fringoids think the mics picked up some coaching piped in to Romney, but it was clearly someone on the set who was picked up by the microphones. As I say, probably Brian Williams. MSNBC, which hosted the debates, posted about it on their blog site but that has been taken down. I’m guessing that sooner or later they’ll admit it was Williams.

But that brings us back to something I posted about last night during the debates. These two moderators are hardly non-aligned. Williams interned in the Carter White House, and Russert was a staffer for two well-known Democrats, New York Sen. Patrick Moynihan and New York Gov. Mario Cuomo. This is like Karl Rove being hired to do “Face the Nation,” but no one blinks an eye. Notice how NBC finesses Russerts “experience” in his online bio:

Before joining NBC News, Russert observed firsthand the inner workings of the executive and legislative branches of government as counselor in the New York Governor’s office in Albany in 1983 and 1984 and a special counsel in the United States Senate from 1977 to 1982.

Gee, I wonder what party he was affiliated with.
