It is common practice in Mecklenburg yes, but no less shocking: three more killers plead down to lesser charges and come away with shorter sentences.

Based on the facts — a brutal bathtub beating, a handgun blast to the face, and six gunshot wounds including a head shot — anyone of the cases could have, in a jurisdiction that cared to, gone to trial on first degree murder charges with a life sentence in the balance. Instead, the killers got sentences of 15, 15, and eight years by saving the county the trouble and expense of a trial.

This is what passes for justice in Mecklenburg County.

Update: The Tyco looters have just been sentenced to at least eight and perhaps 25 years in prison. These thieves should go to jail. But not for longer than killers.

This is what passes for justice in America.
