Obama’s one great advantage over McCain is his stunning speaking style, which is so powerful Obama sometimes gets away with statements of almost pure absurdity.

In his acceptance speech, for example, Obama declared it “the moment when the rise of the oceans began to slow and our planet began to heal”.

John McCain will never deliver a line like it, yet his supporters should deliver enough electoral college votes for him to become the 44th President.

The real battle between these two isn’t over youth, age, war or colour (not as much an issue as you’d think in the US now, even in the south; Louisiana elected a black governor in 2007).

It’s between moderate right and relatively far left. On that score, McCain is a winner.
