Swain County has been attempting to get compensation from the federal government for taking land off the tax rolls to turn it into a lake. The deal closed, with the federal government promising $4 million to be paid over ten years. But the money isn’t moving. Congress says it lacks authorization for the payout – even though a bill says the money is due – because an itemization got lost in the shuffle of pages the elected representatives must process.
