I hate it when good and intelligent people get mixed up in things that look very fishy. That’s why my mother instilled in me that I was not to hang with the wrong crowd. However, efforts are underway to get DA Ron Moore to drop charges against suspects apprehended for riotous vandalism downtown last spring. According to the report in the Citizen-Times, May Day was celebrated by 30-40 anarchists wearing black, slinging hammers, and effecting about $18,000 in property damage in Downtown Asheville.

Local anarchist groups are claiming the wrong black-clad anarchists were apprehended that night. Evidently there were two groups of black-clad anarchists following in close succession. The first was breaking glass, and the second was blind and deaf to the sights and sounds. One would think the anarchists would want to be associated with the disorderly conduct, but nobody is claiming to have a clue what message the demonstrators were trying to convey.

Instead, the groups are clamoring for the DA to release the suspects because (1) they are sending him postcards, (2) his office did not comport, itself with the “decorum or judicial integrity” the anarchists expected, and (3) if he doesn’t, he favors the tourist trade more than people. Most of the fifty form post cards begging for the release of the “Asheville 11” were sent from Warren Wilson College addresses.

To date, $2500 has been raised for legal defense for the suspects. $0 has been raised for the persons who sustained property damage.
