What just a few days ago was just a concept is rapidly becoming a reality: A petition drive to force the repeal of the half-cent transit tax in Mecklenburg County.
A new Web site is already up and dedicated to getting the repeal question before voters on the 2007 ballot. Stop The Train Mecklenburg is just now setting up shop. It will be the electronic spearhead of the petition effort, an effort far beyond the reach and control of the Uptown crowd.
Early-bird requests for copies of the repeal petition, which has yet to be written, can be made by visiting the site. Just think, 55,000 signatures from county residents could make the Uptown crowd sweat a little. It is not pitchforks and torches, but it is close. Real close.
