Check out this fascinating — and cautionary — tale about home owners who are being blindsided by the state’s plan to subsidize a railroad through their backyards.

Seems the developer who sold the homes is adamant that Mount Holly city officials told him that the that the railbed which has been idle for decades was destined to be part of a — wait for it — a greenway. But the state’s 1991 purchase of the line maintains a transportation easement and mentions “future transportation uses.” Sure enough, the General Assembly has put $5m. toward running trains between Gastonia and Mount Holly.

Choo-choo! Get out of the way folks!
