N.C. Rep. Pryor Gibson, D-Anson, introduced a bill on May 14 that would rescind the local-option land-transfer tax. Its 0-for-20 record on the ballot may have done something to prompt this legislation.

But the truth is, the quarter-cent sales tax hasn’t done much better, having passed around 20 percent of the time it’s appeared on the ballot. Maybe that should raise some questions about the morality of counties spending tens of thousands of dollars to supposedly educate citizens about the hikes that voters obviously hate.

The N.C. Association of County Commissioners still maintains that folks simply aren’t “educated” enough about the taxes. Rebecca Troutman of the NCACC told WRAL News this:

It takes a while to educate the citizens to let them understand what the money will be used for.
