Here’s the N&R’s front-page story and lead editorial on Terry Grier’s troop surge:

Grier hopes his initiative will produce positive results in a hurry. If the plan works, it will be worth the cost of lost central office productivity and the part-time sacrifice of curriculum facilitators at other schools.

In fact, if it works it may show a need to sustain the surge until all the battles are won.

Then there’s this story on lower-than-expected bids for the Academy at Smith:

Renovation of the Academy at Smith could cost about $300,000 less than Guilford County Schools officials predicted.

Contractors offered to do the work for nearly $2.2 million, compared with an estimated $2.5 million. The Guilford County Board of Education will vote on the bids Thursday.

The beleaguered project has suffered from higher costs and delays in the year since the Guilford County Board of Education agreed to buy a former office building and turn it into a specialty school.

Because companies are looking for jobs during a slow construction period, the timing for bids was good, said Kevin Lear, the district’s chief operations officer.

Despite the lower bids, renovation work could still end up around $2.5 million, he said. Companies often charge extra if they have to make changes during construction.

I wonder what the odds are.
