The Chicago Tribune is making a big deal this morning about printing an extra 50,000 papers to satisfy the public’s need to own a piece of history. My questions: ONLY 50,000? In Chicago?
In 1993, when UNC won the NCAA basketball championship, we at The Herald-Sun put out an extra that was on newsstands and for sale at our building by 11 a.m. the morning after the Tar Heels defeated Michigan’s Fab Five.
Before it was over we had printed and sold an extra 50,000 newspapers. We did the same for Duke’s 1991, 1992 and 2001 wins, but the magnitude of that 1993 extra was never surpassed.
