Some UNC leaders say the university system needs more money to fight the “brain drain” of professors who leave N.C. campuses for higher salaries at other schools.

The latest Pope Center report tackles that issue. The center released its report at a morning news conference at the Legislative Building.

Author Jon Sanders points to one of the key factors policymakers should keep in mind (video):

I’m certainly in favor of good teachers getting more money and being able to stay, but if we’re going to keep the focus on making sure … that the students get a good education from the professors, I think we need to take a look at the full picture and not just use faculty compensation as a proxy for the education that they’re receiving because it could be that some of the higher-paid professors are not teaching as much and some of the lower-paid professors are teaching more.
