Disgruntled parents with kids in Charlotte’s public schools want to see the system broken into smaller districts – a move they say would make the schools more responsive. This week, Lindalyn Kakadelis spoke to the General Assembly’s Joint Education Committee about research on large districts. On Tuesday, however, the House Education committee voted 36 to 4 to defeat the bill that would have allowed deconsolidation. Writing in Friday’s Charlotte Observer, Paul Chesser reminded parents they aren’t held hostage by legislators; they can choose to homeschool their kids, as have roughly 28,000 North Carolina families. “Forget the politicians – don’t let them dictate to you how you will raise your children,” he wrote. In a related matter, Kakadelis this week also made a presentation about school choice to the NC Association of Independent Schools.
