Proposed downtown design guidelines are an issue here in Greensboro, and now Winston-Salem ponders downtown design guidelines:

The restrictions being considered by the Winston-Salem City Council would force architects to design buildings with more windows at ground level, to build up to the sidewalk, and to have an entrance every 100 linear feet.

The goal is to make the heart of downtown more inviting to people walking on sidewalks, said Rence Callahan, an architect and chairman of the board for the Downtown Winston-Salem Partnership, the nonprofit that pushed for the creation of an overlay district in downtown.

The question —-discussed in the comments below the article —- is whether or not the guidelines would attract or discourage downtown development. I say another layer of red tape is the thing Winston-Salem —-or Greensboro, for that matter —-needs right now. But that’s just my opinion.

I guess the question here in G’boro is what standards the new downtown luxury hotel —- which the N&R praises in today’s editorial —- will uphold.
