Despite the dubious merits of using $91 million in public money to help Wachovia build a $400 million office complex/arts center the plan does have the virtue of making clear that the bank will call the shots. That at least gets out in the open the way things work in what passes for Charlotte’s art community. What the banks want, the banks get.
Plus presumably the sharpies at Wachovia would never let costs get out of hand like the county did with ImaginOn. Recall that the super-duper Uptown children’s library started out with a price tag of $25 million which quickly zoomed to $41 million.
