By a 4 to 3 vote, Wake County commissioners gave support to the General Assembly’s law — vetoed by Gov. Perdue — that ensures no one’s legal vote will be negated by someone else’s fraudulent vote. At one point, the commission debate turned to potential fraud in the absentee ballot process. Commissioner Erv Portman, who railed against the resolution and voted no, talked about greater potential for fraud in the absentee process. He’s right on this point, but wrong on his “no” vote against the resolution. Commissioner Portman, a Democrat, is running for the N.C. Senate seat in District 17. Should he be elected, I will watch to see if/when he puts his concern about absentee ballot fraud into a bill that protects North Carolinians from this disenfranchisement.
