From one end of the state to the other there is certainly disagreement about “big-box” retailers.  This week, Nags Head made a move to ban them from existence by limiting the size of stores through planning.

“This ordinance would encourage big stores to stay out, and then the mom and pop stores could survive,” said Bortz. Mayor Pre Tem Anna Sadler agreed. “The large stores have closed several of our locally-owned stores over the years.”

And over in Charlotte, big-box gets an incentive.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — A proposal to demolish a nearly vacant shopping center and clear the way for a Wal-Mart store prompted questions Monday on the use of tax dollars to help the world?s largest retailer.

The plan is for the developer of the Walmart to get $500k in taxpayer incentives because Walmart will be paying $144k a year in property taxes.  Same argument used for EVERY incentive in the state. Just wondering when GoldenLeaf, JDIG and the rest of the corporate welfare movements will be cheering the big boxes around the state for job creation as well.
