That is only possible conclusion to draw from what CMPD Chief Darrel Stephens had to say about the shooting death of Wayne Furr. Stephens said no department policies or guidelines were violated when Officer Anthony Payne shot Furr while Furr was working on cell tower equipment off of Albemarle Road.
This quote about sums matters up:
“If the officer didn’t do anything wrong, that means it could happen again,” said Jesse Watkins, associate pastor of First Baptist Church of Oakboro, where Furr attended. “An innocent man can get killed again. Something was wrong. The police aren’t pointing that out.”
Stephens still has not told the public exactly where the other two officers were when Payne issued commands to Furr to put down his gun. The fact that Stephens’ statement makes no mention of the other officers hearing Payne’s commands strongly suggests that they did not hear Payne’s commands. If not, why not?
This is a very simple, basic point that must be answered.
Either that, or Darrel Stephens should be fired for gross incompetence.
