It’s called the 2010 Plain Writing Act, which requires federal agencies to write in clear, “plain” language. It’s bad enough that bureaucrats have to be forced into this, and that members of Congress were so willing to endorse lawmaking of this kind. Now comes the predictable story that some agencies haven’t put much effort into complying. It is a classic story that, on its face, makes the case for limited government. My solution for bureaucrat-speak in government is the same as my solution for industry-speak in the private sector: replace the supervisors and managers who let it continue. No law required.
