While many Republican/conservatives caved and voted for cloture on the immigration reform bill, most, including North Carolina’s Richard Burr and Elizabeth Dole, held together today to defeat cloture on the Orwellian-named Employee Free Choice Act. This bill would end secret ballots in union preferences, thus allowing union thugs to know whom to pressure when the next vote comes round. Of course, that’s now how the “progressives” see it. They see a secret ballot as hampering the freedom of workers. Yeah, figure that one out. The measure has already passed the house, with the help of six of North Carolina’s seven Democratic representatives.

Sen. John Edwards was at a union event last week and claimed those who were against this bill were against democracy for not allowing employees to “just sign a card” to signify their desire for union membership. There’s a world of deception hidden in that little phrase, but, then, that’s John Edwards. Edwards knows that this effectively ends a secret ballot, something, ironically, that United Farm Worker founder Cesar E. Chavez fought for in the 1975 labor laws he was backing in California. Now, California is trying to outlaw secret ballots in state legislation. Chavez must be weeping in Heaven.
