Scott Yost’s Rhino story on the new Guilford County jail is worth the read, but allow me to sum it up:
-Commissioners put $112 million bond for new jail on the ballot;
-Voters approve bond;
-County commissioners, struggling with bond debt, question sheriff’s request for more officers to staff new jail;
-Sheriff says new officers will staff “programs” put in place because commissioners complained the jail was not doing enough to make inmates more responsible members of society;
-Some commissioners “have even suggested looking into the idea of not moving inmates to the new jail until the economy picks up and the county has more money”;
-The county isn’t sure what it’s going to do with the prison farm or the High Point jail.
